Teenagers Should Be Allowed to Work Part-Time Jobs
By Kenisha, Year 7, Canberra (Australia)

I think that teenagers should absolutely be allowed to work part-time jobs, as long as they don’t work during school hours. Working a part-time job can teach teenagers responsibility and provide them with the opportunity to earn their own money. Aren’t parents a little tired of their children constantly asking for money? Well, this would certainly change that dynamic. Additionally, there are countless options and opportunities, making it a helpful and beneficial experience for your child.

I firmly believe that teenagers should be able to work part-time jobs for all the reasons mentioned above. For instance, when teenagers take on a job, they must be punctual and communicate respectfully with their colleagues and managers. These skills are essential for their development. By learning to behave maturely and manage their time effectively, teenagers will not only improve their behavior but also learn how to interact respectfully with others from an early age. Practicing these skills helps them become more responsible.

When students are around the ages of 10 to 21, they are influenced by peers, social media, adults, and advertisements, which often lead them to desire things like clothes, shoes, makeup, skincare products, accessories, and cars. I’m sure all parents are aware that their children frequently nag them for items that require money. When teenagers secure jobs, they earn paychecks, which enable them to cover their wants and needs, such as going to the movies or paying for rent. This experience can also teach them how to save and spend money wisely, skills that will benefit them in the future.

Working a part-time job imparts the valuable lesson of hard work. Hard work is essential for achieving significant goals, whether that means securing a promotion at work or buying an expensive item like a phone or watch. It could also involve acquiring technology or equipment or even purchasing gifts for loved ones. When teenagers put in effort at their part-time jobs, they learn the importance of hard work. They will feel proud of themselves for having worked hard to earn money, which serves as a reward. This sense of accomplishment will motivate them to continue working diligently, not only for their benefit but also for those around them.

In case any parents are concerned, you can ensure that your child’s workplace is safe and that they feel comfortable both physically and mentally. This way, you can guarantee your child enjoys their time at work in a secure environment.

Therefore, I strongly advocate for allowing teenagers to work part-time jobs because it teaches them the values of hard work, failure, success, money management skills such as spending and saving, and responsibility. Don’t you, as parents, want the best for your child’s present and future?
