The Day My Dog Went to School

Samiksha, Grade 6, Melbourne (Australia)

Jack and Mike were the best of friends, practically inseparable. Mike always followed Jack, and Jack did the same. They had never fought with each other or been jealous because they owned the same things. But one day, Jack felt a little bit envious. For Mike’s 7th birthday, he had gotten two German Shepherd dogs, Buttercup and Maverick. Jack, however, was never allowed to have a dog because his parents thought it was too much work. But soon, things took a very good turn. For Jack’s 9th birthday, his parents finally decided to buy him a small poodle! Jack was over the moon. At first, Jack questioned if it was a teddy bear because the dog looked so miniature and lovable. Then, suddenly, an astonishing idea popped into Jack’s head, “We should name the dog Teddy!” Jack’s mum and dad thought it was an amazing idea.

Teddy was not only an adorable miniature dog but also a very mischievous one who always stuck his nose in everything. He was always up and about, a very playful dog for being so young. One day, while Jack was getting some stationery for school, the mischievous dog somehow found its way into Jack’s front pocket and zipped it closed so that he wouldn’t be seen. When Jack lifted the bag, he exclaimed, “This is as heavy as a herd of elephants! I wonder why it’s so heavy!” As Jack dragged the bag on his back, his dad had no clue that Teddy was in the bag and told Jack to hurry up as he was going to be late. While walking to the bus, Mike asked why his bag was so heavy, but Jack had no idea that a literal dog was in his backpack and could only say, “I don’t know.”

After a long bus ride, Jack went to put his bag in his locker. When he opened the front pocket to get his pencil, he finally realized Teddy was in his pocket! He quickly panicked, unsure of what to do because if he told the teachers, he would get suspended, and if he told his parents, he would get scolded. Mike saw the trouble-causing fluff ball in Jack's bag and screamed, thinking it was a ghost. Jack had to explain what happened and how scared he was, especially since there was a scholarship test that day. In the last two periods, he would be in the giant auditorium with the school’s strictest math and supervision teacher, Mr. Goble, who would be watching them closely. Jack was scared and had to think of a plan quickly. But then Mike had an idea! He decided that during the scholarship test, he would take care of Teddy, and for the rest of the day, Jack could keep him. Luckily, Jack had a double period of English in the first two periods, and he was certain he would not get caught because he had Mrs Pretty, who always cared about her looks, as her name implied.

He was EXTRA lucky because Teddy was tired and out of breath after being in such a confined space, so he slept at Jack’s desk. After that, it was time for a snack. Mike asked, “So how did it go?”

“Pretty well. Mrs. Pretty was in the girls' bathroom doing her makeup for the majority of the time. The only time she came back was to get her lipstick.”

“Lucky duck,” said Mike as they walked to the cafeteria. After seeing all the food set out on the table, even Teddy had to peek out of the bag to see the delicious food. After a while, Mike said dogs couldn’t eat most of the food there and that the food they could eat was in the kitchen. Mike knew this because his mum sometimes volunteered for end-of-term sausage sizzles, so she knew the kitchen well. The two had to find a way into the kitchen without getting caught. Then Jack had the ‘brilliant’ idea of letting Teddy out to chase away the lunch lady so that he could sneak in and get the food. Once he got the food, Mike would take Teddy and pretend to give him to the principal. Then the plan went into action.
